Sow Your Own Seed

What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it?  It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.  Luke 13:19

What stands out in this scripture is what the man did with the seed.  The man in this parable took the seed and threw it into his own garden.  He did not throw the seed into his neighbors, his friends or his family’s.  He sowed the seed into his own soil.  We learn in Luke 4:11 that the seed is the word of God as Jesus explains in the parable of the sower, “Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God.”  And in Matthew 13:19, Jesus explained further that “the word of the kingdom is sown into the heart of the sower.”  The man in this parable took the living Word of God and sowed it into his own heart where the kingdom of God grew and benefited many others.

Why is this important?  This is important because as disciples and followers of Jesus Christ, we are commissioned to advance the kingdom of God on earth.  The best and most effective way to do this is for each person to take responsibility for sowing the Word into their own heart.  The heart is where the sowed Word takes root and grows.  The kingdom that grows inside your heart will overflow into your life and bless many others like the man in this parable.

Jesus is the Master gardener.  He is the Word that became flesh, He is the seed.  He knows full well the condition of the soil in each person’s heart.  He knows whether the soil is good, hard, rocky or weedy and He knows how to prepare the soil so He is able to grow what He wants in your heart.  And only Jesus knows how to tend and care for it so that every seed sown will grow and become fruitful.

Jesus has a plan and purpose for every heart.  Plans that He made in advance.  Plans to sow seeds in you that will grow and become fruitful in your life.  If you depend or rely on another to sow the Word of God into your heart, you may not know the seeds they are sowing and for what purpose.  But when you sit with Jesus and sow the Word into your heart you can rest assured that every seed sown is good, truthful and guaranteed to transform you into His likeness.  You can always trust the seed that Jesus sows.  Jesus made a way for us to cut out the middleman and go directly to the source, who is God, the source of all truth, all knowledge and all wisdom.  We don’t need another to sow the Word into our heart.  We have Jesus!

When you sow it, you know it.  You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.  You will be set free from patterns of this world.  You will be set free from lies.  You will be set free from worry and the deceitfulness of wealth.  You will stand firm and will not be led astray.  You will be stronger and will be protected.  The law of God will be written on the tablet of your heart and you will not depart from it.  There are great benefits for you and for others when you sow the Word of God into your own heart.  His Words are faithful and true and they never fail.  So go, start sowing the Word and allow Jesus to tend to your heart so the kingdom will grow inside of you and you will start spreading the good news that Jesus is alive and that He in this very moment is saving and changing lives forever.

For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Matthew 28:19

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32

And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” Revelation 21:5
